It's safer and likely cheaper than buying an unknown instrument and possibly be surprised with a ton of fees.

Not too expensive, plus gives him the chance to decide whether or not he loves it enough to go the rent to own program. My fiancé is just starting the saxophone and we've opted to rent for the first few months. Myer Music offers rentals for $27 a month - I'm not sure if that's only for students but you may want to give a call!Įven if your wife doesn't mind cheaper things, an instrument is really not one to skimp on - the timbre (sound quality) is really dependent on the metal used, pads, etc and while she may be able to get sound and notes out on a crappy one, she'll feel better and prouder of herself when it sounds nice, haha. It looks older so will likely need repairs. If you tell me what metro area you're in I'd be happy to give you advice on where to go!Įhhh yeah it worries me that they didn't post pictures of the pads or anything like that. It can be very cheap - as little as $15-$20 a month, especially if you rent a used instrument. Repairs and maintenance are generally included in the price and you'll know exactly what you're getting. In all honesty it may be easier to do a "rent to own" at a music store.

Personally, if you're set on buying used, I'd arrange for the meeting to be at an instrument repair shop so you can have someone look over the instrument and tell you what you're looking at in additional costs. The cork in the head joint will need checked as well. If any of the joints are warped or too loose, they'll need adjusted and/or fixed. If any of the wires are loose (which you won't be able to see yourself as they're encased in a metal cylinder) you'll need those fixed and that can get pretty expensive. If there are dents, that can affect the sound of the instrument. If any of the pads don't form a tight seal when closed or are too dried out, they'll need replaced. It'll be easy to take advantage of you because you know nothing about flute or flute repair. Tacking on to what the other poster said, a $75 flute could easily rack up $300 or more of repairs.
